Open houses are a great way for potential homebuyers to get a real life view of a property before deciding to pursue
a home further. It’s estimated over 50 percent of homebuyers attend open houses, so the process is a hallmark step
for home sellers to really highlight what their property has to offer.

Are you in the market to purchase a home and plan on house touring? There are a few must-know tips to consider to
make sure the process goes smoothly for both you and the home seller.

Come prepared with relevant questions

During an open house, the home seller usually has their real estate agent represent the property on their behalf.
This is a great time to come prepared with questions about the property to get a better idea if it’s worth your
time.

Consider asking about why the home is being sold, the structural well-being of the space and what’s included in the
home sell. Keep the questions clear, direct, and most of all respectful. This is not the time to criticize the
owner’s decorative taste or the property itself.

Be respectful

In addition to asking questions respectfully, please adhere to the wishes of the owner of the property during the
showing. This may include but is not limited to:

  • Removing your shoes at the door to prevent dirt from tracking in.
  • Refraining from eating during the open house.
  • Not going through personal items of the owner.
  • Monitoring kids during the showing and not allowing them to run around unsupervised.

During this time, you can take notes on what you like and don’t like to review later after the open house. By
greeting the host and thanking them for the open house after the showing, you’ll leave a positive impression which
can work in your favor if you decide to pursue the home.
